From May Day to Memorial Day, keep your pantry “bake-ready” to crown May’s celebrations with home-baked specialties. If its worth celebrating, its worth your personal baker’s touch. My top five suggestions for this month are
#1: Bake a “bite-sized” bouquet of treats to fill a May Day basket made from a large cone-shaped coffee filter or large cup lined with a pretty napkin. Candidates include sunshiney Lemon Poppy Seed mini-muffins or a gluten-free option; bite-sized snickerdoodle cookies, your favorite cube-sized bars or sugar-coated soft pretzel bites.
#2: Savor something new for Cinco de Mayo. Wrap your favorite flavors in a homemade tortilla—made in a bag or bowl! Try fresh tortillas as Breakfast Burritos or Pocket Fruit Wraps, all found in Spanish or English at www.kidsacookin.org
#3: Always treat mom with chocolate…especially in her cinnamon rolls. Included on-site is a ”Cinnamon Roll How-to” video tutorial. If chocolate’s NOT the right thing, another half dozen cinnamon roll options for flavors and types are offered.

#5: Set the table to bring back, or make, memories for Memorial Day. Plan tea, coffee, breakfast, brunch or a full meal and bring family and friends together. Do a little home work to include at least one recipe from an earlier generation, like a Homestead Biscuit or Cornbread, or a local traditional bread or dessert, if possible. Laying meal plans for Passover and Easter? Consider eight “old and new” test-kitchen picks offered by Clabber Girl’s Baker Blog www.clabbergirl.com. Challah Dough Bialy Rolls or savory Parsley Biscuits will be a perfect meal fit. I may skip the chocolates and simply serve the Fresh Fruit Pizza as a welcome to Spring tulips and daffodils.

More than 2/3 of the educators we survey tell us they want to bake more whole grain recipes. Both achieving and enjoying the goal to eat “3 or more servings or 48 grams of whole grains daily” becomes easy with so many wonderful whole grain resources found among HBA’s member test kitchens.

Whole Grain Sampling Day (WGSD) is an opportunity to have people everywhere saying, “That was great! Where have whole grains been all my life?”
Any activity, no matter how big or how small, can be a part of Whole Grain Sampling Day, so long as it encourages whole grains. The Whole Grains Council offers tons of resources for WGSD, from downloadable brochures and handouts about whole grains, to a Whole Grain Grocery Store Tour Kit, to Whole Grain Trivia Contest Kit, to a database of sample Tweets for WGSD.
